Take the Ride of Your Life for Diabetes

Take the Ride of Your Life for Diabetes

Tour de Cure is a series of cycling events held in more than 80 cities nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association. The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Whether you ride 10 miles or 100 miles, you'll travel a route supported from start to finish with rest stops, food to fuel your journey and fans to cheer you on! Find your Tour de Cure!

Since Tour de Cure's beginning in 1991, thousands of individual riders and teams have participated to support the Association's mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Now you can make a difference in the lives of the 20.8 million Americans suffering from diabetes by joining thousands of cyclists around the nation who are riding in Tour de Cure.

Form a team
Riding with people you know makes participating in the Tour de Cure even more fun! Teams can be made up of co-workers, friends, family members or anyone who wants to do a great ride for a great cause.

Become a Team Captain
Fighting diabetes is a team effort and Team Captains are the leaders in that fight. If you can recruit four dedicated people to ride with you (and we know you can!), consider becoming a team captain.

Become a Volunteer
Each year, more than one million volunteers offer their time or resources to the American Diabetes Association. The Tour de Cure needs volunteers in the following roles:

Committee Leadership
Take charge of a group of volunteers to organize one of the key event areas such as logistics, publicity or day of event activities.

Committee Members
Every leader needs talented troops to accomplish the job. Committee chairpersons need help in several route support functions such as communications, safety, medical and signage.

Day of Event Volunteers
The day the riders have been waiting for has finally arrived. As an integral part of the Tour team, volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Check-in Area: welcome riders and help with check-in
SAG (Support And Gear vehicles): help riders with mechanical problems and transport tired riders to the finish line
Medical: need EMT’s and RN’s to treat injuries
Mechanical Support: provide bicycle repairs
Motorcycle Escort: communicate among stops, cruise the course looking for danger zones, track the first and last riders on the course
Ride Marshals: participants who serve as an example of safe riding
Rest Stop: serve refreshments and provide medical support
Finish line: cheer riders in, serve refreshments and distribute t-shirts

Spirit of Tour Tributes

Tour de Cure participants and donors have a special spirit that is motivated by generosity and the common goal of finding a cure for diabetes. Barbara has shared this spirit with others by posting a Tour Tribute explaining her reasons for donating. Who inspires you?

Tribute to: Robert Slade
From: Barbara Lawson
Date: 5/30/2007 12:24 PM
Message: In loving memory of my brother Robert, who passed
away from the effects of diabetes on Easter Sunday,
April 11, 2004.

Why They Ride
Every cyclist has their own reason for riding that drives them to the finish line.
Maybe you have a family member or other loved one with diabetes, or maybe you have diabetes yourself. Some participants join because they love the thrill of riding with so many other cyclists on a great route. Others join because it’s a good excuse to dust off the bike and ride with the family.
