Supplements provide nutrients that may be missing from your diet.

Even if you watch what you eat, you can still do more to fight the effects of aging

There are many reasons to take supplements, but the primary reason is that food will not provide optimal antioxidants, vitamins, minerals or other nutrients. In fact, no study of the American diet has ever shown that food provides all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients to give us optimal and ultimate health.

Most Americans assume they are getting adequate amounts of nutrients from food they eat, but elements like top soil erosion, chemicals, acid rain and over-farming, the soil is depleted of important nutrients, especially selenium and chromium. Obtaining Vitamin C and E through food is difficult and getting any amount of alpha lipoic acid and co-enzyme Q-10 is impossible.

In general, there has been a nutrient depletion in most Americans due to pesticides, toxins, smog, chemicals, tobacco, alcohol, tap water (chlorine and fluoride), air pollution, environmental pollution, radiation, refined sugar and flour and other processed foods, prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs, oral contraceptions, acute or chronic illness, weight loss programs and bad-fad diets, stress, heavy metal intoxication and inflammation.

It's a fallacy to think that fertilizers replace all optimal soil nutrients. In addition, there is a substantial loss of nutrients when foods are transported and left sitting on the grocery shelves.

Given all the above factors and based on present scientific studies, it is my opinion that those not taking supplements and antioxidants could be thought of as reckless and risking bad health, degenerative diseases of all types and premature aging.

Please consult your personal physician regarding all individual health matters.

This article brings up many valid points. Give the degradation in our environment and agriculture there is no question that supplements are required to provide the necessary nutrients needed for the body to function optimally. However, just as important as the need for nutrients is the need to eliminate those same toxins that have contaminated the soil and environment; toxins are just as capable of causing degenerative diseases and premature aging.
