Meet Hiker Dave

After nearly five years of living as a retiree, David Koskenmaki found himself in trouble. No, it wasn’t financial or health-related; it was more an emotional kind of trouble. By the time he turned 60, David found himself struggling with feelings of boredom, ennui and uselessness on an almost daily basis.

Of course, nothing lifts one’s spirits like a long walk, say from Mexico to Canada.

An avid outdoors enthusiast, Koskenmaki decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,650-mile scenic trail that runs from the border of Mexico all the way up to the border of Canada. From cactus-speckled desert to ice-coated mountain, the Pacific Crest Trail contains virtually every natural beauty of the western United States. From April to September of 2005, “Super” Dave hiked every inch of the trail, and even managed to help save a life along the way.

“It’s probably the toughest thing I’ve ever done,” Dave said, though he is careful to point out that the experience helped him discover something in himself.

“I think I’ve stopped looking toward the future,” he added. “I’m trying to live my life in the present.”
